“Oh no, they're BANNING RVs!!!”

I’ve seen this headline and comment countless times over the past year. And many people have written to me, worried that no one will be able to own or travel in RVs anymore – at least in certain states.

So, what’s the truth? Are RVs truly being BANNED, or is this just another case of misinformation and fear mongering? I’m going to share the real story and break down the facts about  RV restrictions, why some states are pushing for change, and what this means for RV owners and buyers.

Are RVs Being Banned?

The short answer: No, RVs are not being banned outright. However, some states, particularly California, have introduced policies that will eventually restrict the sale of new gas-powered vehicles—including RVs. The goal is to transition toward zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) as part of broader climate initiatives.

What’s Driving These Changes?

Several states have adopted stricter emissions regulations to combat climate change and reduce air pollution. The primary factors influencing gas RV sale restrictions include:

  • California is implementing the Advanced Clean Truck (ACT) regulation requiring manufacturers to increase, over time, the percentage of zero-emission vehicles they sell in California through model year 2035. The targets for manufacturers of trucks that weigh more than 8,500 pounds are that between 5% and 9% of sales need to be ZEVs by the end of the 2024 model year. That rises to 55% by 2035. Since most RVs are built on truck Chassis, this regulation will affect the number of RVs allowed to be sold in California. However, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) says that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that don’t meet their benchmarks can buy credits from truck manufacturers who do.
  • The RV Manufacturer Industry is in talks with CARB to amend their regulations. But don’t hold your breath that nothing will change.
  • Zero-Emission Goals: States like New York, Massachusetts, and Washington are following California’s lead in pushing for more electric and alternative-fuel vehicles.
  • EPA Regulations: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is setting stricter emission standards that may make it harder for manufacturers to sell gas-powered RVs in certain states.

How Will This Impact RV Buyers?

If you’re in the market for a brand-new gas-powered RV, it may be more difficult in certain states, like California.  However, this does not affect the sale of used RVs and Motorhomes. Nor does it affect 5th Wheels and Travel Trailers.  This also does not mean existing gas RVs will be illegal, no one is coming to confiscate your RV!

Are Electric RVs the Future?

Several manufacturers are already exploring electric RV options, but widespread adoption is still years away. The biggest challenges include battery range, charging infrastructure, and affordability. Until these issues are resolved, gas and diesel RVs will remain the dominant choice for long-distance travel.

The Real Truth About RV Sales Bans

Despite alarming headlines, gas RVs are not disappearing anytime soon. While some states implement stricter regulations, RV owners and buyers will continue to have options. The RV industry is evolving, but for now, gas-powered models remain a viable and accessible choice.
